The Great American Milk Drive

Since we were kids we have been told that milk does a body good. It contains vitamins and calcium needed for the development of strong bones and muscles. Being the mother of 4 kids this is something that I think about all of the time. I have 2 children that love drinking milk all of the time. And the other two will drink it as long as it is chocolate milk. 🙂 That is ok by me. The important thing is that they get their share of milk. One of my sons is obsessed with cereal. He would eat cereal for breakfast, lunch, and dinner if I let him. This is another way that he gets his milk!

We are lucky enough to have food to eat and milk to drink. But this is not the case for everyone. The past few years have been very hard on the economy here in the US. This has caused some families to have to rely on food banks to meet their food demands. As we well know there many hungry families in the world. Children in those families can use help getting what they need to grow big and strong.

The Great American Milk Drive launches today. The goal is to deliver nutrient rich milk to hungry families. Made possible by the nation’s dairy farmers and milk companies, this initiative will enable the public to easily donate milk online. Customers can visit the Milk Life website and purchase milk which will then be donated to a food pantry. Donations can be as little as $5. Every dollar collected will go to purchasing milk for hungry families. The goal is to deliver two millions gallons of milk across the country. It is reported that 95% of food banks do not receive enough milk to meet the demand.

Even a celebrity is joining this great cause. Jesse Tyler of the popular show Modern Family is helping to raise awareness of the importance of supplying enough milk to food banks. Also involved is nutritionist Ellie Krieger. However, you do not have to be a celebrity to get involved.

Today I am attending a launch event here in the Chicago area to kick off this initiative. The main launch event is being held in New York City. However there are 9 other simultaneous events being held at other locations around the country. The events are being held in the following 10 locations.
