The past week or so in Chicago has been the most insane weather that I have seen in a long time! When I woke up in Chicago last Monday morning and looked out the window I had a shock. There was snow everywhere! It was beautiful. But umm… it was April 9th! I was certainly not seeing spring. I was thinking, “WHAT IS GOING ON HERE??” We had a couple of teaser days of warmer weather, then right back to cold temps, then back up again. Ugh!

We had a high of 63, and then it was in the 70s! I thought that there might be hope. But nope! The temps plunged again and we got more snow. I am not a hater of winter, but right now? I AM SO SICK OF WINTER!! I find that I’m dragging. I’m more tired and down than I should be because the weather sucks! So, I really need to push through and pretend that spring really is here. This means that I need to bring spring into my home.

With spring comes sunshine, rain, flowers, pollen, and… allergies! We already talked about building your healthy home. But once you have it, how do you ensure that your family stays healthy for spring while still making your home feel more spring-like?

Here are a Few Spring Home Tips

Bring in Some Sunlight and Fresh Air

Even in the winter, when I’m home during the day one of the first things I do is open up the blinds. I love bringing natural light into the house. In the spring this is even more important to me. I love being able to see the trees start to change, the flowers bloom, and the grass turn green. It really uplifts my mood. And if the weather permits, I open up the windows and get some fresh air. With that temperature currently at 38 degrees, I won’t be doing that any time soon!

Add Some Fresh Flowers

What better way to make your home feel like spring than to add fresh flowers? I love the look and the smell of fresh flowers. Consider adding a couple of vases full of fresh roses, marigolds, or carnations. However, I do not like that flowers don’t last very long in vases. In this case, you can add potted flowers like orchids, hibiscus, or an African Violet.

Clean the Floors and Carpet

Throughout winter the floors get a bit grubby. When we rush in with groceries, etc.  that require multiple trips we do not remove our shoes before going to the kitchen. Give the floor a good cleaning and polish. Once you open those blinds and let the sunlight in you will appreciate the clean floors! Otherwise, the sunlight will show it all!

And sprinkle your carpet with some carpet deodorizer before vacuuming to freshen it up. Choose one that fits your needs to either neutralize pet odor, fight dirt, or just for general freshening.

Refill those Plugins

I have a confession… I am OBSESSED with smell good plugins!! I have them in various outlets all over the house. I love that every room can smell nice. The little bursts of freshness are awesome. I keep one by the front door, garage door, and definitely in all of the bathrooms. You can purchase spring scents like Enchanted Floral Garden or Hawaiian Breeze to bring the outside in.

Change Your Furnace Filter

Spring is a great time to change the furnace filter. Get all of the winter nasties and gook out of there! On our Aprilaire system, we only have to change it every 6 months. If you have a traditional furnace, you will have to change it more often. Check the filter. If you see any dust or lint, it’s time to change it. Be sure to get the right size!

Change Your Decor

Quick things like changing the curtains, toss pillows, or comforters on your bed can make it feel like a new place. I’m also a fan of swapping out bathroom decor like soap dishes, towels, and other accessories with the season. You can also consider having a set of art that matches the season. Or, get an awesome digital canvas that lets you quickly and easily change your art with the seasons.

Add a Room Purifier

Winter can make the air in your home stale and stuffy. Opening up the windows can help combat this. However, if someone in your home has allergies, this may make them suffer. If it’s not in your budget to revamp your HVAC system right now, consider adding a portable air purifier like the new line from Aprilaire. They are neat and actually pretty attractive and can tuck right into the corner of your room. They are good for everyday air cleaning, or to remove allergens like pet dander, and more.
