Gmail Voice & Video Chat

November 13, 2008 by Kris McDonald 4 Comments

Well, I always joke that Gmail is taking over the world, and here they go again. Now, right in your gmail window, while chatting with a friend, you can do a video chat.

I have not tried it out yet. I need to get a guinea pig on the other end. The only drawback I see though is that you have to install a browser plug-in. This is not a problem for most folks, but some cooperate users like gmail because their company allows them to use it without needing to install anything on their machines, so if they are interesting in video chat, they will not be able to use it.

I will post more once I have tested it. 🙂

Google is taking this whole cloud computing thing very seriously. They want everyone to be more web reliant than OS reliant. You can see this through the way they treat their chat clients. The googletalk web based client has three different sets of smiles and a tabbed interface, gmail chat now has video conferencing, but the windows desktop client is still just basic voice and chat, when will the desktop get some upgrade love?
