Having a fun and safe Halloween with your kids

October 26, 2011 by Kris McDonald

I have always loved Halloween. From the time I was a little girl loved dressing up, trick or treating, and partying on Halloween.

I didn't do too much outside trick or treating because it was usually cold on Halloween. I grew up in Chicago one block away from the lake so it got quite chilly at the end of October. I only remember a couple of days where it was warm enough to walk around outside without a jacket. Any other time, whatever fancy costume I was wearing was covered up by a large coat. But, I was lucky enough to live in a large apartment building so my friends and I went door to door in the building and collected goodies.

We also had a lot of parties. I have some very fond memories of costume parties, candy, dancing, and games at my best friend's house who also lived in my building. Her mother always made sure that we had a great time on Halloween. There were loads of decorations, food, and lots of candy.

And of course there were the costumes. I remember being Elvira, Mistress of the Dark. LOL!! I also loved being a witch. Then there were the kids that wore their underoos as costumes. I would not recommend that now. 🙂

I think it's important that parents make sure that young kids, tweens, and teens alike have a safe Halloween. With my own kids, I try to make sure that they have a great time on Halloween by joining in the fun. Last year we did make an attempt at trick or treating on our block, but it was FREEZING!! So, we did not stay out long. 🙂 We came back in and waiting for the trick or treaters to come to us. We got plenty of visits from teens! Whomever thinks teens do not enjoy Halloween is just wrong.

My kids are lucky in that the subdivision where their Grandmother lives throws a party for the kids every year. They have a safe, warm environment to have some fun. And I love listening to their memories after the day.

This is my favorite pic of the kids in their Halloween costumes:
