So are you sensing a theme from me??? Along with those flowers (if she likes them), Mom needs a new toy!! I was sent an 8.9″ Kindle Fire HDX from Amazon. I wasn’t sure what to expect, but I am SO impressed! Many Kindle Fires have passed through my home. My daughters each have a regular Kindle Fire that I got for them a couple of years go at Christmas. They still use them and they love them. Although they don’t use them quite as much since they got their smartphones. But when home they use them to watch videos, play educational games, and read.
I also gave my mother a 7″ Kindle Fire HD not too long ago. It is her first tablet too! I gave her a quick lesson, told her how she could hook it up to her TV to watch Prime movies, and showed her how to download new apps. But you know what?? She has barely called to ask me any questions! And usually when she gets a new piece of tech I get several calls. I think it’s because the Kindle Fire series is made to be user friendly.

Great Entertainment Device
The Kindle Fire HDX is a pleasure to use and hold. It’s a lot thinner than the original Kindle Fire and than some other tablets that I have used. At only 13.2 ounces (13.5 ounces for 4G) it is one of the lighter tablets found in this size range. The 1080p HD screen at 8.9″ makes watching movies a pleasure. And since I have an Amazon Prime account I can watch thousands of movies and TV shows at no extra charge right on my device.
Thousands of Apps
Although the Amazon store doesn’t have quite as many apps as the Google Play store, it is getting there. Although I notice that some things that my kids and I have on our Android phones are either not available in the Amazon store, or not free like they are on Google.
Decent Camera
Honestly, when I review a tablet the camera is the last thing that I worry about testing. Why? Because who buys a tablet for the camera?? That is why they make point and shoot cameras, and smartphones with great cameras. And I still think that people look silly at events holding up huge tablets to shoot pics and record video. 🙂 However, I did snap a few pics with the Fire HDX and they are pretty good. Certainly good enough to use in a pinch if your tablet is the first thing that you reach for because you just cannot get to your phone. The 8mb camera rivals that of a decent smartphone camera for sure. There are not many options in the settings, but it does have a flash, HDR setting, and Panorama which is really all you need.

Part of my Chuck Taylor collection, taking with the flash turned on. Not bad, not bad at all.
