Location
Standard apartments can be located anywhere, but are typically located in less sought after areas. They can still be fairly central compared to houses, but may not always come with great views.
Luxury apartments on the other hand tend to have a prime location. They’re generally located in safe and upmarket areas, and the views are often much more attractive.
Size
The average size of a standard apartment is 500 to 1200 square feet. They tend to have a basic selection of rooms. Some may have balconies, but they are usually fairly small.
Some luxury apartments can be a similar size, however others are much bigger – in some cases the size of a house. These apartments often have larger kitchens, additional bedrooms, and bonus rooms like walk-in wardrobes. Balconies are often larger and may wrap around the apartment.
Finish quality
Standard apartments tend to have fairly basic finishes such as laminate countertops or vinyl flooring. If furniture is provided, it is usually mid-quality. The design is typically functional, although there may be a few attractive features to entice prospective tenants.
Luxury apartments tend to push the boat out more. Expect high-end material like oak wood veneer or granite worktops. Furniture may also be higher quality if provided. Smart technology is also more likely to be incorporated into this class of apartments.
Shared amenities
You typically will only get basic amenities in a standard apartment. This includes a laundry room, a parking area and potentially private sheds for bicycles and prams. The quality is going up however, and more standard apartment buildings are starting to incorporate features like gyms and lounges.
What can you expect in a luxury apartment? Features like swimming pools, premium gyms, rooftop terraces and private cinemas are more common in these types of buildings. Some even have lounge areas with a private cafe or bar.
Services
The shared area of a standard apartment block should be cleaned on a regular basis. It is also up to the landlord or agency to make sure any repairs are carried out. Beyond this basic maintenance, you may not be entitled to any other services.
Luxury apartments on the other hand often have concierge services that make them feel more like a hotel. This includes a reception desk with staff who collect mail for you, arrange transportation or check in visitors. Some may even have dedicated staff to take care of the pool, gym or bar.
Cost
Standard apartments are designed for those on a tighter budget. They come with lower rent and lower service fees.
Luxury apartments are much more expensive – although the cost can vary depending on the location. In cities, like New York and Los Angeles, expect to pay over $4000 per month for a luxury apartment. In some smaller towns, you may be able to rent a luxury apartment for much less – even $1200 per month in some places.
