Earlier today I was listening to the Prez (aka President Barack Obama) talk on a local Chicago radio station. One of the things that he talked about is how the unemployment rate is going down. No, it is still not good, but it is going down (supposedly). When I hear about something like this I do not think about the McDonalds, Walmart, or even secretarial jobs. I think about IT jobs. I’ve been in IT for a long time and have been blessed to not have to look for a job because I have been at the same company for 16 years. But I have many, many friends that have lost their jobs. Some were in IT, some not. And at my own company there have been layoffs left and right.
My IT friends have been actively looking, some for quite a while. One has been lucky enough to find technology management consultant jobs here and there. He travels all over the Chicago area working on projects and does whatever needs to be done for small businesses. I tease him all the time about having 5 jobs. But that is not too far from the truth. He is doing what he needs to do to make ends meet.
There seems to be a divide in what is “hot” in IT jobs right now. Things like it security consultant positions are in high demand because viruses wait for no one. Companies need to be protected. They may have to downsize here and there, but they are not going to compromise their company security.
Some friends have even opted to relocate. Atlanta and Dallas seem to be popular spots right now. One could argue that is because it is much, much warmer down there in winter. LOL!! But there are also other reasons. The perception may be that there are more IT jobs “down south” at the moment. Companies like NCC Data are hiring IT Consulant Dallas.
Yes, I can admit secretly I would LOVE to move south and get a cushy job in IT somewhere at a firm where everyone is in Hawaiian shirts. Hm… well actually we used to have a Hawaiian shirt day every Friday back in the day. LOL! Anyway, if you are looking for a job in IT and they do not seem to be where you are… consider moving! It’s hard to do, but it might just be worth it.
