I’m Shopping for a New 4G MiFi

For about the past 2 years or so I have used a Comcast 4G MiFi when traveling or when out working. I love having the convenience of being able to get on the internet via my laptop or tablet to get some work done no matter where I am. It is also great if staying in a hotel that does not offer free WiFi.

Well, customers got a notice a while ago that as of August 31, the service is being discontinued. Boo!!! This means that now I have to find a new provider. There are many options our there, but when checking around I think Clear is going to be the best option for me. I checked out the coverage map at http://clearwirewimax4g.com and it appears that most places that I might have to visit in the US are covered. And the Chicago area and beyond are well covered.

Besides coverage, of course I have to consider price. While I know that some carriers may be better on speed than others, some are very expensive too. If I go for a plan from a wireless provider it would probably be a lot more expensive. Clear plans start at $34.99 and go up to only $49.99 for unlimited. While that will be $10 more than I was paying before, it will be worth it. I like to do unlimited because I do not like to have to think about limits at all. And there are some cases where I might have to be connected for several hours at a time. And when in hotels I sometimes use my iPad to stream movies. So, the faster unlimited will work out great for me. 🙂

I actually tested the service quite a while back when they were brand new to the Chicago and things were still iffy. I know that is much better now. I might be contacting Clear very soon to get setup. I will be sure to let you know how it goes.

I’ve always wanted to invest in a product like this… especially when I’m out and about and think, “let me look that up” but realize I’m unplugged.

Thanks for a great post, I am looking for this type of plan also. Now, as far as home are you going to stay with Comcast? I have this thing about paying twice for internet. At home I use WOW cable for TV and internet. I use FREE Wi-Fi on the go, but I am considering looking for a service provider.
