I used to watch soap opera’s and giggle at just how put together the people always are. They are always fully dressed at home with a full face of makeup, so they are always put together. And someone is always dropping by. This is not real life. Well, at least it is not MY real life. If I do not know like 3 days before that I am having company I am usually in pajamas or sweat pants… and my house is at least a tad messy. LOL! This is NOT a good look for entertaining. 🙂
But what can you do to be ready when you get that call that friends are in the area and they want to stop by? Just a few simple tips can help you stay prepared. #1 Try to keep your house straight: I know… I know… it is much easier said than done. This is especially true if you have kids. But, there is a way to keep the amount of cleaning that you have to do when company is coming by to a minimum. Encourage your kids to clean up after themselves. I am forever asking me to do just this. Each night before you settle into your room, make a walk through the house. Straighten up common areas like the living room and dining room. In my home these are areas where we do not hang out much, so it is pretty easy to keep them clean. If you do this on a regular basis when someone says that they want to stop by you can do one last quick walk-through and do important things like quick cleaning the bathroom and getting all of the junk off of your kitchen counters. 🙂
#2 Keep some party ready items on hand: When you go shopping grab a couple of extra cases of soda, a case of water, boxes of crackers, and wine. Store those away so that if you have to offer guests something in a hurry, you have a few things on hand. Keep extra cheese, fresh veggies, and some summer sausage on hand to pair with those crackers. And, keep the number of your favorite pizza place nearby. If friends are dropping by with kids pizza is always a hit!
#3 Have plenty of pretty party dishes: I keep decorative plates to serve appetizers and other snacks. So, even if you are only serving pizza at least it will look nice! 🙂
#4 Ask your guests to bring something: If you have a few friends dropping over they will not mind bringing a dish. Have someone bring a cake, someone else can bring a veggie tray, and another can bring the wine. This puts a lot of stress on you.
If you have just those few things on hand, you can whip up a nice snack to keep your guests entertained and fed.
