The Importance of Wearing Sunglasses – My Obsession

June 27, 2014 by Kris McDonald Leave a Comment

The weather here in Chicago is well… Chicago-like! It is hot as it can be, but we keep having thunderstorms. Between those storms the weather is humid and the sun is shining. I love summer. I love the warmth, the beauty, and being able to go out without wearing 5 layers. And I love being able to dress cute and actually show my fashion sense without hiding it under a huge coat! And in the summer I usually rock a cute pair of sunglasses. I have a few pair for fashion. But, besides them being cute or cool, we should all know the importance of wearing sunglasses and how they protect our eyes.

I can admit that have a bit of an obsession actually. I have several pair in different styles and colors. I even have a board on Pinterest dedicated to sunglasses.

But sunglasses were not only created to make us look cute. They are there to protect our eyes. Last year on this date I wrote about the importance of sunglasses in my post Summer is Here: Wear Your Sunglasses, for Fashion & Eye Health. And now it is time for a reminder.

The Benefits of Wearing Sunglasses

  • Sunglasses keep you from straining your eyes (no squinting at the sun)
  • Sunglasses improve vision while driving
  • Sunglasses protect your eyes from harmful UV rays
  • Sunglasses make you look cool (what?)

So the most important one in that list is that good sunglasses protect you from harmful UV rays.

What is UV? Why Do We Need Protection From It?

UV stands for UltraViolet radiation. Sunlight is the main source of UV rays. There are different types of UV. However, all types can damage different parts of your eyes leading to things like macular degeneration and cataracts. It is better to be safe than sorry. Wear your UV protection sunglasses at all times when out.

You should also wear them when driving. In the afternoon during sunset the sun is positioned just right to get in your eyes and impair your vision. Put you visor down, and wear your sunglasses. Glare from the sun can cause accidents. I see people rounding corners and breaking hard when that sun hits their eyes.

Also, please make sure that you are getting your eyes check when you should! Most eye doctors recommend getting check at least every 2 years. Exams looks for changes in your vision, as well as other things in your eyes. You want your eyes to stay healthy, right?

VSP Understands My Sunglasses Obsession

As mentioned I love my sunglasses. And as part of my being a VSP Ambassador I got to pick out a few pair of designer sunglasses. Sqqquuueee!!! I was too tickled! I got a couple pair of Michael Kors, Calvin Klein, and Anne Klein.

Yes, I told you…. I have a problem (this is not all of the ones I own)! But at least it is one that can protect my eyes!

How many pairs of sunglasses do you own?
