Tips on Avoiding Holiday Home & Travel Nightmares

I have yet another confession. One of my all-time favorite movies is National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation. That movie cracks me up. It gives us a taste of what can happen if several family members descend on your home at the holidays. Hopefully, no family is quite as hectic as the Griswalds! But, the holidays are a time when everything not going as it should can cause problems. National Lampoon is also responsible for the original Vacation movie that made at laugh and cry at what happens when family road trips go wrong. None of us want that stress!

Unfortunately, when traveling things can and will go wrong. Unforeseen things like losing your luggage, canceled flights, and other unforeseen circumstances can happen. That’s just the tip of the iceberg. Let’s look at some of the crazy things that can happen while traveling.

Home Theft

Home theft is never fun. I’ve been there. Luckily they did not get much, but I felt very violated! Depending on how long you are gone on vacation, you just might come back to an empty home. Do not let this happen! It’s important to leave your home looking lived in. Arm your alarm, set some timers for lights, and ask your neighbors to keep an eye out. Here are a few posts that I’ve written about home security and traveling.

Losing Your Luggage

I travel a lot. And I have been very, very lucky so far. I have never had my luggage come up missing. ***knock on wood***. There was one incident of TSA going through my luggage, but it’s never been lost. Be sure to lock your luggage using TSA approved locks. You should also take photos of your luggage, and have a good description. Also, be sure to fill out the name tag with your name, address, and phone number.

If your luggage is lost, report it immediately to the airlines lost luggage department. And you may want to hang around the airport for a while to see if it shows up on another flight.

Getting in Trouble Unexpectedly

No one… and I mean no one wants to get in trouble while on vacation. But, it can happen. Didn’t you see The Hangover? Yeah… crazy things can happen. Yes, vacation is supposed to be fun… within reason! Know the local laws like the back of your hand, or you could end up in serious trouble. Don’t let your crazy friends influence you! Don’t forget that things like drinking limits vary from country to country and state to state. Otherwise, you could have one too many and end up being pulled over by the police. Houston law office, Scheiner Law has some great information on what to do in the event that you are stopped by police.

I could go on about all of the things that could go wrong while traveling, but I’ll stop there.
