If you know me you know by now that I love gadgets, and I love smart home gadgets and technology. I plan to have just about everything controllable from my phone at some point. I am getting there, slowly but surely! One of the things that I find most useful to have on my smartphone is my garage door openers. You may be wondering why someone would need that. Yes, why indeed? How many times have you left the house and wondered if you left the garage open? I know I’ve done it a couple of times. Or, imagine that a friend needs to stop by and check on your house. They do not have a key. It would be nice to be able to let them in remotely. Thanks to the Chamberlain MyQ® Home Bridge and WiFi, I can do these things by controlling my garage doors from my phone.

What is MyQ®?

If you are not already familiar with it, MyQ® technology allows you to use your smartphone to control your garage door. It uses two-way communication to connect to and control your garage door opener, gate operator, or even lights using your smartphone, tablet or computer from anywhere that you have an Internet connection.

What is the MyQ® Home Bridge?

The MyQ® Home Bridge is for users that want to add smartphone functionality to their garage door. If you do not already have a WiFi enabled garage door opener, you may be able to convert it. As long as you have a MyQ® enabled garage door opener, you can install the new MyQ® Home Bridge. Within minutes you will be able to control your garage doors from anywhere.

And even if you already have a WiFi enabled garage door opener, you will need the MyQ® Home Bridge if you want to use it with Apple HomeKit™. You can easily add the MyQ® Home Bridge to the Home app, and add your garage door. You can even tell Siri® to open the door!

Requirements

In order to use the MyQ® Home Bridge you must already have a Chamberlain or Liftmaster MyQ® enabled garage door opener. You can look for the MyQ® symbol on your opener, or check the documentation on the website.

Brand Compatibility

  • Chamberlain and LiftMaster MyQ®-enabled garage door openers
  • Chamberlain and LiftMaster Wi-Fi enabled garage door openers (MyQ® Home Bridge adds HomeKit™ compatibility, smartphone control already included with Wi-Fi openers)
  • Chamberlain and LiftMaster MyQ® Garage
  • Chamberlain and LiftMaster MyQ® Lighting Controls (models WSLCEV, PILCEV, 823LM and 825LM)
  • Chamberlain and LiftMaster Internet Gateway (MyQ® Home Bridge is a replacement for this device and adds HomeKit™ compatibility)

Installation

Installation is pretty simple. The MyQ® Home Bridge can be mounted on the ceiling near your garage door opener, or even on the wall elsewhere in the garage that is near a power outlet. I chose to mount mine on the wall. Just follow the simple instructions to pair the Home Bridge with your garage door openers. Depending on the placement of your Learn button you may need to climb up a ladder and push the button.

If you have more than one garage door, like I do, you can program both using the 1 and 2 buttons on the side of the unit.

IMPORTANT NOTE: If you are already using your MyQ® enabled garage door opener with another app, such as the LiftMaster app, you will have unpair that one and start over if you want to add it to the Chamberlain app. I had to do this.

Usage

Once your unit is setup you will be able to control your garage door(s) from wherever you are. You can even setup alerts to notify you if the garage door is left open more than X minutes. And you will be able to see how long the door has been open or closed. I love this feature. There is no guessing, or calling your spouse to ask, “Did you remember to close the garage door?” And this featured coupled with other smart home features means that you can turn on lights, open the garage, and unlock the door for trusted friends and family.

In my home we have a mix of devices. My husband has an iPhone. My kids and I all have Android devices. MyQ® technology works with both which is awesome. On Android I use the Chamberlain app. There is also a Chamberlain app available for iOS. Or, use it with Apple HomeKit™ and ask Siri® to open or close the door.

And, once MyQ® is enabled you can even use IFTTT, or Google Home to ask interface with your garage doors. How cool is that? I am an IFTTT user and I cannot wait to see what I’m able to do with it.

The Chamberlain MyQ® Home Bridge can be purchased for only $69.99.  Now through December 14th  get free shipping  on all MyQ® Accessories (includes HomeBridge, Smart Garage Hub, as well as Remote light controls and light switches) using promo code Holiday17 on Chamberlain.com.
