Now that you have purchased a new home, what are you going to do with it? This is a question that you should be thinking about as soon as you’re looking into making a purchase, but if you’ve not given it much thought before, now is the time. The world is your oyster when it comes to making changes to your home, so you can get started on this as soon as you want to.

If you’re not sure where to start and you need a little bit of advice, we’re more than happy to provide that for you. Down below, we’re going to be taking a look at some of the things that you should do now that you’ve got your new place. Want to know more? Read on.

Change The Locks First

The first thing that we’re going to talk about is changing the locks. You don’t know who has a key that fits the current lock. It’s easy to say that you have gotten all of the keys back, but what about anyone who was forgotten? What about if there were keys made that the previous owners didn’t even know about? This is where you are going to run into problems, and it’s why you should get the locks changed.

It doesn’t cost too much to do this either, you just need a locksmith and some new locks. Once this has done, you can have that full peace of mind that nobody who isn’t supposed to have access, does.

Clean It From Top To Bottom

This one might sound a little strange to some, but we know that there are others who are going to back us 100% with this one. As you’re the one who has to live there now, we do recommend that you clean the space from top to bottom with your own cleaning equipment so that you know it’s clean for sure. Or, if you don’t have the time for this but you want it cleaned by someone you trust, hire a professional cleaner to come in and do this for you.

It’s not that you don’t trust the last people who lived there, but you want the space to feel like yours and you want to start this new chapter of your life somewhere clean, right? You don’t want any surprises to greet you when you open a cupboard somewhere, as this is the worst.

Start Adding Your Belongings

Now that it’s clean and safe, you can start adding your belongings. Cleaning an empty house is always much easier than trying to clean around everything, so it’s best to get that done before you empty anything that you own into the space. We are aware that for some people this puts them a little behind the schedule that they wanted to adhere to, but it’s worth it.

It’s important that you think carefully about where you are going to be putting all of your items, as you want the place to look right. Where is your couch going to go? Where is your dining table going to go? How do you want the living room to be arranged? These are all things that you’ve got to think through and come to a decision about. It might be the case that you have to move things around a few times before you find the right fit, but that’s okay, you’ll get there.

Decorate How You Want To

Another key aspect of owning a home is enjoying the process of decorating it. Watching it transform from someone else’s home to yours is a wonderful thing to be a part of. It might be that you want to change the color on the walls, or switch out the existing carpet for hardwood flooring. Whatever it is you want to do, make a list and ensure it fits into your budget.

Look Into Making It Greener

There will always be ways you can create a greener, more eco friendly home. If you care about the environment and the planet then this might be high up on your home priority list. If your house didn’t already come with them then you could look into installing solar panels. These will take energy from the sun and turn it into electricity you can use throughout your home. The best time to install these in actually before summer as that way they can start storing energy for the winter.

With the right energy independence you can save so much money on your annual energy bills. Don’t be afraid to shop around for the best deals and the best companies to install them.

Work On The Garden

Finally, if you are lucky enough to have a home with a garden then you will want to look after this. Whether you are green fingered or not, it is essential you take care of your garden otherwise it can quickly become unsightly. Remember, it isn’t just you that is looking at your garden. If you are overlooked then your neighbors also have to look at it and nobody wants this, you don’t want to fall out with your neighbors because of it.

Work out a plan when it comes to your garden, you might have a rough idea of how you want it to look. It might be that you want a low maintenance garden with stones or even astro turf, if this is the case then shop around for quotes. If you don’t have the skills to do this yourself then you will also need to hire a landscaper to turn your dream into a reality.

We do hope you found this article helpful and it gave you some ideas on what you need to do with your new home. It can be such an exciting time when you purchase a home, you can get all caught up in it. However, if you miss some steps then you could find out that there are still people with keys to your home for instance. Ensure you make a new home checklist and tick completed tasks off as you go.
