Home Habits That Accidentally Invite Pests Inside

Most homeowners don’t mean to welcome pests like ants, spiders, and mice into their home, but it happens more often than you think. Sometimes it’s the simplest habits that invite pests in without anybody realizing.

If you’ve ever found yourself wondering, “How did that get in here?” this post is definitely for you.

Let’s have a quick look at some of the most common home habits that can attract pests and what you can do to stop the invasion before it starts getting worse.

The Overlooked Places Pests Love Most

Not all pests come through the front door, many will sneak in through quiet, forgotten spots. These are the areas that you rarely look at or think about.

Basements and attics are definitely favorites for pests, they are dark, warm, and usually full of stuff that doesn’t get moved around. Mice, in particular, love to live in these low-traffic zones.

Another hotspot that you might not think about is under the sink. Damp, leaky pipes are practically an open invitation for cockroaches and silverfish. These pests thrive in areas that are moist and dark, two things that you will find plenty of under the kitchen or bathroom sink.

And don’t forget about your door frames and window sills, any tiny cracks or gaps in the weather stripping can look like wide-open doors to pests like ants and other small insects.

If you store pet food or birdseed in the garage or mudroom, make sure it is always sealed tight. Rodents are going to sniff this out really quickly, especially in the winter when they are looking for food and shelter.

Everyday Routines That Make a Difference

The way you clean, cook, and even store things in your home can make your home less defensive to pests.

For example, if you decide to leave your dishes in the sink overnight, that’s an instant sign for pests who are looking for leftovers. The same goes for any crumbs on the counter or trash that can go without a lid. Even a little food residue brings the bugs from outdoors.

Laundry piles, especially damp ones, can attract silverfish or roaches, especially in humid areas. Make sure that you stay on top of your laundry as much as you can, and if you aren’t on top of it, keep it off the floor where possible.

If you forgot to sweep under your kitchen cabinets or vacuum behind furniture, those out-of-sight places are often out of mind, and they’re exactly where pests love to hang out. A quick weekly clean in these spots can go a long way to protecting your home.

The Simple Fixes Homeowners in Fenton Should Know

The changes in weather can easily make your home more vulnerable to pest issues. Cold winters send rodents and insects inside for warmth, while warm months bring ants, mosquitoes, and spiders. But the fixes for this don’t have to be complicated or expensive.

Seal up any gaps around your doors and windows, especially before winter comes, and store food in airtight containers, even if it is in your pantry. Clean up after every meal and empty your trash frequently. If you still see any signs of pests or want to prevent a bigger problem, local pest control services can help inspect and treat your home safely.

Is there anything that you do to your home to protect it from pests? Let us know in the comments.
