5 Simple Ways to Protect Expensive Electronics at the Home Office

When you protect expensive electronics at home, you not only save money but you proactively reduce the chances of losing work that can be corrupted by a faulty computer or sudden power loss. From installing surge protection to managing pesky cables, here are some suggestions.

Properly Ventilate the Room

One of the biggest killers of electronics is dust combined with heat. Modern devices need adequate ventilation to perform at their best, and this includes desktop and laptop PCs, televisions, and video game consoles. Dust extraction combined with AC and a single hung window screen goes a long way to helping your devices stay relatively dust-free as cool as possible without turning the home office into a freezer where you can’t work productively.

Always Install Surge Protection

Surge protection is one of the easiest and most powerful ways of combating electrical problems. Even in a new home or a brand-new electrical system, there can be sudden surges of electricity, including energy from storms and lightning, and these can cause a blowout. However, simple surge protection power strips prevent power overloads and can save your valuable electronics. There are many brands, but look for UL-certified strips with power protection up to 2,000 Joules.

Protect Expensive Electronics with a UPS

Office workers, on average, can lose up to half a day’s work when the power suddenly goes out. This isn’t what you need when trying to build a successful eCommerce website, collaborate with colleagues, or get those TPS reports completed! However, there is a solution that most people don’t ever consider. Besides saving your work every five minutes, you can avoid potential data loss and OS corruption with a UPS that gives you enough time to save and shut down safely.

Don’t Overlook Cable Management

OMG, how annoying are cables? Not only are unmanaged cables unsightly, but they are also hazardous. Cables that are stressed can break, and this poses a fire risk or can lead to power surges across electrical devices. However, if you don’t manage cables correctly, there is also the risk of tripping over them. Cable management isn’t easy, but it helps to keep it in mind when adding a new device, and if you need to, remove all devices and place them back in neatly.

Take Personal Cybersecurity Seriously

Cybersecurity isn’t only a mild inconvenience at the office, but an absolute necessity when working from home. To ensure your devices are safe, follow cybersecurity best practices when working from home. This can help ensure your computers and other hardware aren’t infected with malware. However, taking cybersecurity also ensures that you don’t breach company policies or even regulatory compliance laws you are liable for when handling sensitive data.

Summary

Properly ventilating the room or area can help protect expensive electronics when working from the home office. If there is a chance of data corruption due to power loss, you can use a UPS to safely save work and shut down a PC, and it’s never too late for cybersecurity best practices.
