I cannot believe that I it’s been sooo long since I have posted about this, but here we are. I have been using Rakuten for years to get cash back when shopping from multiple websites. I mean… I’m shopping anyway, might as well get a little something from it. 🙂
What is Rakuten?
Formerly Ebates, Rakuten is a site, browser plugin, and mobile app where you can get cash back while shopping at thousands of stores. You can shop from stores including Macys, AeroGarden, Gardyn, Best Buy, 1-800-Contacts, and many many more.
The sign-up bonus is currently $30. It is usually higher during the holidays.
Yes, it’s legit. I have been a member since 2013 and have received a nice amount in cash back. It could be so much more, but I used to be horrible about remembering to use it. Here’s my current lifetime cashback.

How Do I Get Cash Back with Rakuten?
By far the easiest way to remember to use it and get cashback is through your computer browser. I use Chrome (highly recommended), so I do not know how the extension works on other browsers. But, for Chrome you can install it by going to chrome://extensions (in your URL bar) and searching Rakuten. Once installed, you get a pop up anytime you navigate to a Rakuten partner site.
Just click the Activate button and it does the rest. Yep, works through my affiliate links too.
On your smartphone you can install the app from the app store. BUT… when you get ready to shop you need to open the Rakuten app, then click through to the store that you are shopping on. This is what I always forget!
So, when doing major shopping just use your computer to be sure you don’t forget and get your cashback which can sometimes be huge. I’ve gotten as much as 20% before. The usual seems to be 6% – 12%. If I recall, last year some sites that sell AeroGardens had cashback as much as 15%. And Gardyn had 20% cashback.
The browser plugin will keep track of your shopping, send you an alert when you have a qualifying purchase, and you choose where the money goes. I get cash deposited into my Paypal account. Deposits are every quarter.
