5 Ways To Maintain Your HVAC

Maintaining your HVAC system in top condition throughout the year is a proactive step that puts you in control. This is especially important for those who rely on their HVAC more during seasonal changes. The unit and its components undergo significant strain with continuous use, and it’s natural for parts to wear out. By staying on top of maintenance, you can ensure your HVAC continues to provide the heating and cooling you expect.

An HVAC system that is poorly maintained or in need of repair can lead to increased energy consumption, a higher risk of breakdown, and subpar performance. Being aware of these potential risks can help you avoid them. By caring for your HVAC system year-round and following these tips, you can ensure it operates at its best.

Change Filters

Regularly changing your HVAC filters is a simple yet crucial task that can significantly impact the system’s efficiency. Dirty filters can restrict airflow, making the unit work harder than necessary and putting additional strain on it. By changing your filters every 1-3 months, depending on use and filter type, you demonstrate your responsibility and attention to detail in maintaining your HVAC system.

Check Settings

At a minimum, you must ensure that your thermostat settings are appropriate for your season. If not, it’ll be working harder than it should, which can lead to premature or excessive damage. So, as the seasons change, take a moment to check the settings and ensure they’re right for what you need from them.

Servicing

A certified HVAC technician should inspect your unit at least annually to ensure it is in full working order and that nothing is wrong or impacting its efficiency. Ideally, you will want to get this service during the times of the year you don’t use it so much or before periods of higher demand, i.e., prior to hot summers or cold winters when you rely on the system more.

A hvac technician can assess your system as well as clean, test, and replace any broken parts. They will ensure it’s free and clear of any debris, that the system as a whole is in good working order, and that you don’t experience a breakdown when you need it the most.

Clean Vents

You need to regularly clean your vents to remove any dust or dirt buildup that will impact their ability to move air through the house. You need to identify those posts most prone to accumulation and monitor them so you can keep them clean and reduce anything likely to hinder them abruptly from operating efficiently. You can use a brush to clean, from top to bottom, left to right, so you don’t miss any parts and ensure everything is removed.

Seal Leaks

Leaks cause 20 to 30% of the air moved through ducts to be lost. So, it’s important to identify and seal any leaks that can make your HCAV less effective and put more pressure on the system. You can do it yourself using mastic sealant or metal tape; however, if you want to know everything has been sealed correctly and you haven’t missed anything, talk with HVAC technicians who can do this for you.
